A relatively new brand, Designer Duchess was founded with the mission in mind to limit the use of real animal fur in fashion. Brutus was initially founded in East London by brothers Keith and Alan Freedman  in 1966, aged just 18 and 17 at the time! The name came about from the aftershave the brothers would wear called 'Brut' they then added the word 'us' and Brutus was born.

It all began with a single sweater, they then began to develop t-shirts, shirts, knitwear and even denim. Customers were seduced to purchasing 'figure hugging' jeans by Brutus' award winning adverts, one of them including singing along to David Dundas in 'Jeans On.' (The tune later went on to be a big hit in the UK reaching number 3!) The company managed to remain the forefront of British fashion for 30 years. The 'Trimfit' shirt in particular was very successful selling in their millions from the late sixties into the mid seventies, rightfully they are documented in numerous articles and books about British fashion.

No wonder then that Keith's son Jonathan Freedman revived the company in 2009 with the 'Trimfit' shirt at the forefront. He has chosen to do so in a low-key manner, cleverly reaching a new generation but also remaining a special memory for the older generation. Keen to make the company as authentic as possible Jonathan has returned to the very same Hong Kong factory that his dad and uncle used when first making the shirt, to ensure that every detail of it remains the same.




A perfect example of the 'Trimfit' is this one, in wide check. With smart roll collar and of course the trademark darted fit, a must for any mod. Striking in colour, mainly indigo with scarlet and also touches of black and white to enhance the check pattern. Short sleeved with the iconic cutaway vent. Also with a left breast pocket, the shirt comes with a complimentary red handkerchief.









Brutus have since expanded the range to include more modern Retro and Mod checks, plus a further range including unique prints.

Time for the lowdown on this Seasons key festival trends as we look into festival must-haves for 2014.

Fashion and music are two of our fave entities. Bang them together and you've pretty much got festival season! Here's a few insights into what's been selling well in store at Atom Retro and styles we know are going to be hot looks for Festival Goers!

For the ladies the mini dress is a must. Fab floral and vintage patterned prints are going down really well and we’ve seen a real resurgence in the demand for Retro skater skirts this season. They look strangely great with wellies and let’s face it if you’re going to a UK festival, there’s a good chance you’ll need some wet weather attire. Lovestruck skater dresses (see Lucy dress below)  have done really well and the Florra, Pepe Jeans Boho vintage inspired shirt dress is another cute Retro piece.




… Which is why it’s also good to take a lightweight shower proof jacket and the great thing is pairing a cool Retro anorak with your festival attire is always a cool Indie look. If you want to go for a stylish Mod look then you could always opt for a lightweight parka. A traditional choice for 1960s Mods - parka's protect suits from oily scooters, and they could also protect your threads from festival mud and dirt! Harry Predicts - Spain v Chile. Match kicks off 8pm BST, 18th June, 2014.  

Fresh from predicting the England v Italy result correctly and the U-turn on the decision to call it a draw in the Brazil v Croatia fixture, Harry looks to keep his 100% record in tact with his latest hunch as Spain take on Chile on Wednesday. A crucial encounter that Spain desperately need to win. Who will Harry predict?

Using controversial Bowl Line Technology and slow motion instant replays to ensure there's no repeat of the confusion that surrounded the Brazil v Croatia prediction debacle, the 'Harry predicts' team have unashamedly embraced the hi-tech era of football.

Once again, it's a food based escapade, but this time with an expanded set of rules to benefit both the adjudicators and Harry Cat. The bowl that Harry chooses and eats from first will be the winner.

... and so to the game!

For no reason whatsoever, the mysterious, vanishing shaving foam is used to draw a line around Harry's starting position.

The bowls are put in place..... and we are all set for another episode of 'Harry Predicts'

News Flash:

Here follows a news bulletin into allegations of widespread corruption in the Harry Predicts World Cup Feature.

An apology to Harry Cat from Atom Retro!

Those of you following Harry Cats World Cup predictions will be aware of the result given/published for the opening game of the tournament as hosts Brazil took on Croatia. The prediction was aired on the 12th June prior to the game and alluded to the fact Harry predicted a draw.

However, an internal investigation has since taken place into the conduct of several of Atom Retro’s independent adjudicators following the outcome of the match. It has been alleged that biased editing of the footage occurred, thus detrimentally altering the result of Harry Cat’s prediction. We can now confirm that following this investigation, we have accepted the resignation of one such adjudicator and another member of the panel has been banned from the football predicting adjudicating circuit for a period of 90 days.

The snap shots below show the key scenes. It is the existence of this footage that formed the foundation of Harry Cat's claim.

With this news, we are glad to announce that Harry’s original prediction of Brazil to win shall stand, thus giving him a 100% record for his tournament predictions so far.

Harry’s official complaint centred around the claim that the rules of the game were not properly explained and the adjudicators used inappropriate tactics to undermine the original prediction. Harry assumed that the treats that he ate first would determine the result and the fact he went on to eat any other treats was irrelevant to the outcome of his prediction. Had this been fully explained in the guidelines he would not have eaten any additional sweeties.

A spokesperson for Harry said - “We are satisfied with the outcome of this internal investigation and welcome it’s findings. Harry is proud of his prediction record and is happy to draw a line under this matter. He will continue to predict the results as the tournament goes on”

Harry has refused to comment further on speculation that the results were rigged to benefit certain individuals in an as yet unnamed  syndi-cat who had managed to infiltrate the Atom Retro adjudicator panel.

We will keep you posted as and when any news on the identity of the mystery Syndi-Cat comes to light.

Atom Retro’s black and white cat Harry has taken it upon himself to be the World’s foremost feline football predictor and statistician…. And as he’s quick to point out, he’s got a 33.3% chance of being right!

Harry Cat, who takes his name from Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry woke up one morning this week and asked himself one question: Do I feel lucky?

He decided the only reasonable way to find this out would be to predict the scores during the World Cup in Brazil. You can find out just how lucky Harry is by keeping tabs on his video diary.

Harry predicted a draw in the first game (Brazil v Croatia), but was left feeling dismayed by a poor refereeing decision and has vowed to carry on testing his luck. As Alister Poulton, a leading proponent of Harry Cat’s premonition skills says, “He was left devastated after Thursday's result, he went out and didn’t come back until the next morning. He was feeling a bit sorry for himself. He feels the penalty changed the whole complexion of the game and he was also a little disappointed at the disallowed Croatia goal. He says that goal would have stood in the Sunday League.”

So, how did Harry predict Thursday's scoreline for the tournament opener?

As Alister says, "He basically used his hungry belly as a mathematical instrument to weigh up the odds. He initially went for Brazil, which in itself was actually correct, but I think the nerves and his little tummy got the better of him and he went and devoured the Croatia treats as well. Unfortunately, because of his slightly greedy actions the independent adjudicator stepped in and called it a draw... and we also ran out of time to film the whole thing again, so the prediction stuck!”


With hindsight, Harry has come to realise using food as a barometer and predictive tool is not the best option. He’s got something else up his furry sleeve for his next foray into foretelling football results.

It’s 20 years since the advent of Britpop. The all too familiar sound of the legendary Supersonic guitar riff blazing out of the stereo - released on this day in 1994. Atom Retro reflect on this era of music and it’s profound affect on society, fashion and style.

Forget the Blair-ite Cool Brittania crap that followed shortly after and all too often gets banged in with the Britpop boom, this was about music and the dawning of a new era in style not politics. The lynchpin of the movement being Oasis and the sheer Indie swagger of the lads from Manchester. Mod parkas, desert boots and the iconic Union Jack guitar. The rivalry with fellow Britpop legends Blur who I fondly think of in Retro track tops, Mod Harringtons and cool Indie trainers made the Britpop bang even louder and with everyone’s favourite Common People, Pulp revitalising the trend for skinny Mod blazers, tweeds and fab Seventies shirts, this was bound to be an unforgettable era in British music history.

It was a time where gigs, beer and amazing records flowed freely. A feel good factor gripped the nation. Let’s join together and remember this great time.

The Advertising Standards Authority received 2 complaints about Nissan's use of Franz Ferdinand's 'Evil Eye' which contains the swear words 'Bastard' and 'Shit'. The complaints were quashed when Nissan pointed out they'd paid for a special 'clean' version of the song, replacing the words with 'basket' and 'schtick'. 'Evil Eye' was an overlooked single of 2013, which undeservedly failed to chart in the UK. One of the best indie rock songs of recent times in our book!

1. My First Methlab by Chunk

Retro 70s T-Shirt inspired by the iconic Ladybird books - mashed up with a dash of Breaking Bad iconography too. Blue meth anyone? 

The new Man From U.N.C.L.E remake, directed by Guy Richie, has just announced it will be released in January 2015. More exciting for us at Atom Retro are the promo shots from the set showing star Armie Hammer (who plays Illya Kuryakin) wearing a Baracuta jacket on the back of a Vespa - because Atom Retro supplied a few of the Baracuta jackets used in the film!

The new film is a remake of the 1960s TV show of the same name. Most of the plot details seem to top secret currently, but it appears the new film is set in the Sixties and in the hands of Guy Richie its surely bound to be a slick, stylised affair. The film also stars Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo, Hugh Grant and David Beckham is also rumored to appear!

The film looks like it also features some rather sharp tailoring, as you can see from the pictures on the official facebook page.

It was 50 years yesterday that Radio Caroline first began to broadcast, from a ship in international waters. Launching at midday on Easter Sunday - the 28th March 1964, Radio Caroline would revolutionise British radio.
The first track played was The Rolling Stones' Not Fade Away.

Set up by Ronan O'Rahilly, Radio Caroline managed to circumvent record companies' control of popular music broadcasting in the United Kingdom. O'Rahilly had failed to obtain airplay on Radio Luxembourg for his client, Georgie Fame's records. Radio Luxembourg's airtime was committed to sponsored programmes promoting the major record labels; EMI, Decca, Pye and Philips. The only other radio station available at the time was the BBC's light programme - considered dated and frumpy, and not particularly interested in broadcasting pop music. Radio Caroline changed that - instantly popular, it provided exposure and airtime for bands like The Who, The Move, Led Zeppelin, Cream and more.

Radio Caroline broadcast from 5 different ships from 1964 - 1990 and then via satellite from 1998 to 2013. Radio Caroline currently broadcasts 24 hours a day via the Internet, playing music from the 1960s right up to today.

The trailer for the upcoming James Brown biopic movie, Get On Up, has just been released...


The film, due to be released on the 1st of August depicts James Brown's rise from extreme poverty to international fame and stardom as 'The Godfather of Soul'.

James Brown is played by Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis (who previously played Aibileen Clark in The Help) plays James Brown's mother, Susie Brown. The film is directed by Tate Taylor who also directed The Help. The film concentrates on Brown's difficult childhood, his time in prison and rise to fame and also his relationship with his estranged mother, who abandoned him when he was 6 years old.

Some good light reading comes in the form go GQ’s new Collectors Edition magazines: Bailey’s Heroes.

The March 2014 issue sees Bailey reflect on time spent with John Lennon. He discusses the sense of tension between John and Paul during a legendary Bailey photo shoot, his lukewarm feelings to early Beatles music and seeing John at London’s fashionable Ad Lib Club.

Vesper Dresses are due to arrive at Atom Retro next week!

British brand, Vesper consists of a collection of - absolutely beautiful - figure sculpturing dresses. Cut from luxe, super stretchy fabrics, each dress is designed to flatter and enhance the female form.

Quite a new brand, Vesper is already a fave of celebs including Myleene Klass and Kimberley Walsh. What's even better is this first collection of dresses to arrive at Atom Retro will all retail for less than £60!

A quick look at some of the styles coming from Friday On My Mind this season.

Firstly, you'll all be glad to know the very mod Bibi Dress will be back - and in 3 colour ways! The Bibi Dress sold out almost right away. Well, good news, girls! Bibi is back - in Black/White with green collar or with coral collar (pictured) in short sleeve, and new long sleeve option in black/white with jade green collar. Each one looks divine, so make sure you grab your fave!

Away from the Bibi Dress, Spring/Summer sees some more Friday On My Mind faves return - the Paige polka dot Shirt is back in a new Navy/White colour combo, the Lucy Dress has an update as the new Mary Dress, also in Navy/White and popular tees such as the Anchor T-Shirt and some new Sailor Tees are back too.

New styles include the Minnie Sweetheart Dress in black/white polka dot, new 'Bonnie' cute print in a shirt and day dress options, cute crochet knit jumpers in mint and blush pink, and a must-have stripey jacket - 'Trinity'. Check below for pics of some of the new range.

Here's a quick preview of what's coming from Mademoiselle Yéyé for Spring and Summer this year.

Centering on a 'Summer in Paris' theme, the designers at Mademoiselle Yéyé have split the collection in to two parts - 'Daytime' and 'Midnight' - 2 different looks.

'Daytime' is as you'd expect - casual Mod and Sixties style for days spent in the Paris sunshine, featuring cute tops, pencil skirts and day dresses.

'Midnight' is the dressier side of the collection. For nights on the tiles and summer dance floors, featuring devine Mod Dresses in Sixties influenced black and white contrasts, you will have a hard time choosing which one you want!

Introducing new women's brand, Darling, arriving soon at Atom Retro for Spring and Summer 2014.

Darling range is the vision of London based designers, Nadia Moraes. Ultra feminine, vintage inspired and quintessentially ‘English’, Darling offers affordable luxury clothing with an emphasis on quality and attention to detail.


Celebrity ‘Darlings’ include Kelly Brook, Anna Friel, Peaches Geldof, Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby.

Here's a quick peek at some of the styles expected to arrive this Spring - catering for everyday wear right up to dressier pieces.

Fever London's collection for Spring 2014 is one of their best yet. As with all Fever collections, it's inspired by vintage finds from across the globe - however it's Italy - Milan, the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento which forms the main theme for the collection, as well as the location for the photo shoot.

As usual, Fever's spring collecton is split into three mini-collections - City, Heritage and Occasion, featuring statement prints, mod 50s and 60s inspiration and vintage glamour.

Harrington Jacket in Tan

Merc's coming collection for Spring and Summer 2014 is possibly one of their best yet!

As you might expect, all the traditional and essential Merc elements are here - it's Retro, it's Mod and it's Indie, but it's bang up to date and still on trend. The classic Merc Harrington Jacket will be available in new colour, Tan for Spring and there is also a new colour in the Merc Card pique polo - pink with blue and white tipping, pictured below the cut, under the new Campbell Monkey Jacket in plum (also will be available in Navy).

 Here's a sneak preview of Gloverall for Spring/Summer 2014. Gloverall you might think of traditionally as a Winter brand, with all their fantastically cosy Duffle Coats, Reefers and Overcoats, but don't discount them totally for Spring! After all, in these rainy isles, you definitely will still need a -albeit lighter- coat to keep you dry and warm in those early months.

Gloverall have taken a nautical theme to their Spring collection, centering around 2 special pieces - the rain resistant Windbreaker (pictured) - a traditional classic Retro anorak style in a bright yellow for Spring, made from a treated cotton to make this a perfect transitional jacket - and a short denim duffle, which possesses all the famous Gloverall Duffle specs, but in a lightweight, partially lined, waist length coat specially for Spring.

One other special style worth mentioning is this rather eye-catching Gloverall Duffle coat in a camouflage print (pictured). This is sure to be in great demand and short supply so make sure you bag yours early on! The jacket features the traditional Gloverall Duffle coat specs in a short, waist length and with large patch pockets and a contrasting cord collar and trim to cuff.
